Heading into Black Friday’s massive holiday deals, Patagonia announced they would be donating all of their earned sales to grassroot environmental groups. They already do so with one percent of their year-round sales as well, reaching over $7 million in donations to this point.
That number pales in comparison to the money earned from this previous friday alone. Following the holiday, Patagonia announced that they had reached $10 million on Black Friday and indeed donated all of it.
“We’re humbled to report the response was beyond expectations…. Patagonia reached a record-breaking $10 million in sales. The enormous love our customers showed to the planet on Black Friday enables us to give every penny to hundreds of grassroots environmental organizations working around the world,” said the company in a recent statement.
This is a very noble choice by the company as the money will go towards benefiting initiatives aimed at protecting the planet’s natural resources. Again, this isn’t new to Patagonia, who have made environmental donations a staple part of the company’s image since 1985.
In a recent company blog post, Patagonia chief executive officer Rose Marcario spoke about the brand’s Black Friday efforts. “The threats facing our planet affect people of every political stripe, of every demographic, in every part of the country. We all stand to benefit from a healthy environment.”
While Patagonia continues striving towards making a difference in our environment, one can only speculate as to how much they could raise next year if they decide to do so again. Considering the fact that their $10 million from last friday is five times more than the brand expected, no number is out of the question.
