The 2017 CFDA Awards were held at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City which celebrated the best in American Fashion and for the second year in a row, Seth Meyers hosted the evening.
After just one season at Calvin Klein, Raf Simons took home both Menswear and Womenswear Designer of the Year. The only other designer to receive both honors in the same year was Calvin Klein himself in 1993.
Simons wasn’t the only European born designer to go home with a coveted Trova, with Coach designer Stuart Vevers winning for Accessory Designer of the Year. Since coming on board with Coach on 2013, Vevers has drastically turned the label around for the better with a mix of Americana and whimsy collections and even a collaboration with Selena Gomez.
The Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent went to Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia for Monse. Kim and Garcia have had a rapid rise with Monse which prompted the duo to become co-creative directors at Oscar de la Renta and showed both Monse and de la Renta collections together this past February during NYFW.
Other big honorees for the night included Kenneth Cole who received the inaugural Swarovski Award for Positive Change for using his ad campaigns and runway shows to address social issues like homelessness and AIDS. The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award went to Rick Owens which is certainly deserved as he puts on some of the most memorable shows in recent history. Also Demna Gvasalia for Vetements and Balenciaga was given the International Award.
The Board of Directors’ Tribute went to Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, feminist icon Gloria Steinem and actress/singer Janelle Monae for “their tireless work and achievements on behalf of women, and the powerful voice each had at the historic Women’s March.”
The Fashion Icon Award was given posthumously to legendary Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani, who died in December. Also, legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath became the first makeup artist in history to receive a CFDA Award being honored with the Founder’s Award.
