In her first collection as couturier for the House of Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri showed her first Dior Couture collection and she has big shoes to fill and she sure did. “Mr. Christian Dior, YSL but also Marc Bohan, and Ferré, [theirs] was more an idea of traditional couture,” Chiuri said during a backstage walkthrough of her collection on Monday. “Galliano was very spectacular couture, and Raf was very modernist couture. So I say, ‘OK, I want to determine what it means for me to do couture.’ I think it is important to maintain this idea that it’s wearable, because in any case we have the clients. But at the same time, I don’t want to lose the idea of dreaming.”
Chiuri’s first showing was something that was out a dream, a dream you could actually wear. Set in a garden and taking play on a masked ball (one followed after the show) with full skirts, tunics and head dresses all with a whimsical feel. The dreamlike garden all came together while still staying true to the Dior design aesthetic. 59 pieces made up her first flawless collection and we are sure that it will just keep getting better.
